The Zaca shoulderband is the only native land snail found on campus. A Southern California endemic, this species is only found in the mountains of Santa Barbara County and a small portion of Ventura County. This species is perhaps the most difficult to find, and searching is most productive near creeks during a rainstorm after dark. So far, only juveniles have been found, as the adults are most likely hidden away deep in rock crevices and piles of bark. Shoulderbands are about the same size and shape as garden snails, but they are easily distinguished by the dark red band on the widest point of the shell.
