Southwestern Pond Turtle
Actinemys pallida
The campus duck pond has two species of turtle--and this is the one that is native! It seems to have coexisted with the non-native red-eared slider at the pond for a number of years now. While we are fortunate to be able to see this species, which has declined in much of its range, so easily, it's only rarely that they are seen in a ravine or crossing the road in our area.
