Black Bear

Ursus americanus

Black bears are by no means common around Westmont, though this one was sighted strolling around the library in July 2021. In the extremely unlikely event that you see a bear on campus, chances are it won't be very interested in you--they are typically on the herbivorous end of the spectrum, and are more drawn to garbage than to humans per se.  If you'd like to learn more about black bears in our area, and at the urban-wild interface in general, to gain some appreciation for and helpful perspective on this majestic animal, check out this, and also this article.
